Ron Mix was the second AFL player to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame behind his San Diego Charger teammate Lance Alworth. Now 81 years old, the man they called ‘The Intellectual Assassin’ was called for holding only two times in his ten year career and, believe it or not, when he started weight lifting in high school and then at USC, coaches were against it. They thought weight lifting would make the players inflexible and muscle bound.

At the 1965 AFL All-Star Game, scheduled to be held in New Orleans, a contingent of African American players threatened to boycott the game because of the discrimination they faced there leading into the game. Ron Mix was the first white player to join in the boycott and the game was eventually moved to Houston. This was a fascinating interview with a true football legend!
