Coach Jim Vance came on to chat about some of his Kona observations from past two years. Each year he gets a run split for the pros at mile one of the marathon and it’s always interesting to see whose pace at mile one is closest to their overall marathon pace at the end of the day. Even the top pros tend to go out a tad too hard at the beginning and end up paying for it later in the race. We also chatted about how Aussie Luke McKenzie totally changed his cycling from 2011, when he finished ninth overall with an RPM of 86, to 2012 when he had an RPM of 74 and finished 24th to his huge breakthrough in 2013 when he finished second and had an RPM of 93. With the 2014 Ironman World Championship looming, it’s a good time to have fun with numbers with Coach Vance!
