Darren Brown is a sub-4:00 miler (3:59.59) and one of only five father/son combos in the U.S. who have both accomplished that feat. Darren’s dad Barry was part of an elite group of runners based in Gainesville, Florida during the glory days of American running that included Marty Liquori and Frank Shorter, among others. A soccer player growing up, Darren remembers running the last part of his dad’s long training days with him. Barry ran a 2:15 marathon when he was over 40 to prove that age was just a number. His dad took his own life when Darren was only seven years old. Years later, Darren finally got serious about his own running. This wide ranging conversation moves on from Darren’s own running days to his work coaching his wife Sarah Brown, who made it to the 1500 meter Olympic Trials finals in 2012 and is hoping to punch her ticket for Rio in 2016.
