Triathlete Matt Trautman from South Africa, who turned pro in 2014, was out on a ride in January of 2017 when a driver ran him over from behind, leaving him at about 50 miles per hour. He was left with shattered vertebrae in his back and the very real possibility that his career as a professional triathlete was probably over.

Not quite.

The man known as ‘The Captain’ recently qualified for the 2019 Ironman World Championship by winning Ironman Wales, a race he also won back in 2014.
