Valerie Silk was never an athlete and couldn’t understand why her husband at the time wanted to connect their business, the Nautilus Fitness Center, to an obscure event that only had 15 people entered. The year was 1978, the event was called the Ironman, and Valerie Silk was the person who would guide what would become the world’s most important endurance event for the next 12 years.
