Justin Phongsavanh was at a McDonald’s in Iowa with a friend in 2015. He was an 18 year old high school track and field and rugby athlete with his entire life in front of him. A US Army veteran, dealing with PTSD, emerged from the McDonald’s, went to his car, grabbed a gun and proceeded to pistol whip Justin’s friend. He also shot Justin in the arm and the bullet lodged into his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. The shooter received a sentence of only five years and actually said to Justin, ‘Enjoy your wheelchair.’ as he was being escorted off to jail. This interview takes you through Justin’s journey from the shooting, to his 2017 National Championship in the javelin, to being named to the 2020 National Team.
