We can’t all be together in Kona this year for Ironman Week, but we can still bring you Breakfast with Bob Kona Edition, just virtually this year. Enjoy the interviews for Day 3.
David McNamee
David McNamee made the move from the ITU scene to long distance in 2014, won the 2015 Ironman UK to qualify for Kona, and then took 11th in 2015 and 13th in 2016. After training in Girona with Jan Frodeno and Nick Kastelein in 2017, he took third and had the second fastest marathon of the day. He took third again in 2018 but was sick going into last year’s race and ended up dropping out during the bike ride. But being a guy who can make lemonade out of any tough situation, he happened to drop out near a group of beer toting Ironman fans so the two-hour wait for a ride back to town wasn’t quite so bad.
Sarah Crowley
Since 2016, Aussie Sarah Crowley has gone fifteenth, third, sixth, and third at the Ironman World Championship. She finished out the 2019 season with a huge win at Ironman Arizona and has been down in Noosa training for the 2020 season. We chatted about everything from her breakthrough season in 2017 to her battle with Lucy Charles for second place in Kona in the last few miles of this year’s Ironman World Championship.
Greg Welch
Australia’s Greg Welch won the 1994 Ironman World Championship, finished second in 1991, and took third in both 1989 and 1996. But his 11th place finish in 1999, despite the fact that he was having major heart Issues throughout the day, is simply unbelievable.
John Maclean
John Maclean was paralyzed from the waist down back in 1988 when he was hit by a truck while out cycling. He was training for a triathlon at the time. He came back to become the first wheelchair athlete to finish the Ironman World Championship in 1997, swim the English channel, and medal in the Paralympics. It was when he met Ken Ware where his life took an amazing turn and he actually was able to learn to walk again!!
