Creators of the Leadville 100 Ken Chlouber and Merilee Maupin
The town of Leadville, Colorado had 4,500 residents in the early 1980s and 3,000 of them worked in the mines. When the mines closed, the city was destitute. Ken Chlouber and Merilee Maupin came up with the idea of producing a 100 mile run to drive hotel business to the area. A 100 miler that starts at over 10,000 feet and goes up to 12,500 feet? “No one will do that,” doubters told them. But Ken and Merilee were on to something. The run started in 1983, the Blueprint for Athletes Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race started in 1994, and the town is thriving! Ken and Merilee have created a huge extended family in Leadville that is all about Belt Buckles and Sweaty Hugs.
